Matinee idol,Ford Mustang
Driven by film’s good guy, Tobey Marshall (played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul), this highly customised pony car will shred its tires alongside a rarefied roster of supercars – Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Koenigseggs, you name it. The film, claims Ford, marks the Mustang’s 3,000th film and television credit – the first of which was a cameo by a Wimbeldon White convertible in the James Bond film, Goldfinger, mere months after its debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.
Building on the overachieving Shelby GT500, the NFS Mustang makes use of a modified version of that car’s all-aluminium 5.8-litre supercharged V8 engine. Ford claims that horsepower has lept from 662 to a fairly outrageous 900, though it is unclear whether that figure reflects magical Hollywood horsepower or actual SAE horsepower. Either way, the car looks every inch the hero with its reflective blue strips, lowered stance and 22in wheels all around. The front end wears a revised grille with driving lights replaced by gaping air intakes ringed by LED halos.
Ford’s US press rep insists that while there are no plans to offer a production version of the NFS Mustang, it is possible for a motivated enthusiast to build a close approximation. Shelby Performance Parts offers a $6,000 wide-body kit for the Mustang, and Ford Racing is poised to offer a supercharger upgrade kit that promises to yield an EPA-emissions-certified 850hp. Need for speed, indeed.
Need for Speed lands in movie theatres next March. In the meantime, DreamWorks has released a hard-charging, tire-squealing glimpse of the film on YouTube.
