BMW i3: The game-changing EV?

With a starting price under $43,000 in the US, a car exists – and not just any car, but a BMW – that contains technology heretofore found only in concepts and supercars.
The BMW i3 was unveiled on 29 July during simultaneous press events in London, Beijing and New York. It is the first electric vehicle to be sold by BMW, a brand that to date has only dipped its toes in the EV marketplace via lease programmes for its 1 Series-based ActiveE and, from its Mini division, the Mini-E. BMW has invested heavily in its i project, a fact appreciable by the roll call of executives present in New York: Adrian van Hooydonk, design chief for BMW Group; Ulrich Kranz, project manager for the company’s i sub-brand; and Dr Norbert Reithofer, member of the board.

BMW I3
There are other from-scratch EVs that undercut the BMW’s price point, the Nissan Leaf most readily, but none match the i3 for virtuosity – be it in design, materials or engineering.
A skeleton built from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), the first application in a mass-production passenger car, replicates the tensile strength of steel at roughly half the weight. CFRP is related to the stuff found in the $400,000 Lexus LF-A and $250,000 McLaren MP4-12C supercars, and it does not come cheaply. The lateral-impact strength is also sufficient to forego a B-pillar – the brace that would typically separate the front- and rear-passenger windows. Consequently, when the front and rear coach-style doors open wide, the aperture is massive.
Indeed, the story of the i3 is just as much about what’s not there. Outside, the car looks no bigger than a Ford Focus, but through savvy packaging, the impression inside is that of a minivan. Rare is the family-mover, though, that integrates compressed dry grass into the dashboard structure, or recycled soda bottles into the seat covers.
A 22-kilowatt-hour battery pack, roughly the size of that in the Leaf, feeds power to a 170-horsepower electric motor mounted over the rear axle. The purely electric powertrain is estimated to provide driving range of 80 to 100 miles. That kind of performance does not stave off range anxiety, but an optional range-extending 650cc two-cylinder gasoline engine derived from a BMW scooter can feed power back into the battery pack, effectively doubling the range, BMW claims.
Champions of EVs have long preached that the average one-way trip among motorists worldwide is fewer than eight miles – a built-in argument for the practicality of electric cars, which could merely charge at the driver’s home or a parking lot. But as the public’s hot-cold relationship with the Leaf has proved, range anxiety is real, not a catchphrase cooked up by General Motors to sell its gasoline-electric Chevrolet Volt (also marketed as the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera in Europe). BMW’s decision to offer, if not aggressively market, the range extender seems a shrewd hedge.
BMW purists will argue endlessly about whether the i3 is a true Bimmer. Few design cues beyond the traditional dual-kidney grille would lead an onlooker back to the blue and white roundel badge. But clumsy stabs at brand heritage are not what the i3 seems to be about. “The design should indicate that the future starts now,” van Hooydonk, the BMW Group design chief, said in New York. It was as much a retort to the purists as it was a challenge to competitors. For now, however, it would appear the i3 stands alone.

Matinee idol,Ford Mustang

Driven by film’s good guy, Tobey Marshall (played by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul), this highly customised pony car will shred its tires alongside a rarefied roster of supercars – Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Koenigseggs, you name it. The film, claims Ford, marks the Mustang’s 3,000th film and television credit – the first of which was a cameo by a Wimbeldon White convertible in the James Bond film, Goldfinger, mere months after its debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

Building on the overachieving Shelby GT500, the NFS Mustang makes use of a modified version of that car’s all-aluminium 5.8-litre supercharged V8 engine. Ford claims that horsepower has lept from 662 to a fairly outrageous 900, though it is unclear whether that figure reflects magical Hollywood horsepower or actual SAE horsepower. Either way, the car looks every inch the hero with its reflective blue strips, lowered stance and 22in wheels all around. The front end wears a revised grille with driving lights replaced by gaping air intakes ringed by LED halos.

Ford’s US press rep insists that while there are no plans to offer a production version of the NFS Mustang, it is possible for a motivated enthusiast to build a close approximation. Shelby Performance Parts offers a $6,000 wide-body kit for the Mustang, and Ford Racing is poised to offer a supercharger upgrade kit that promises to yield an EPA-emissions-certified 850hp. Need for speed, indeed.

Need for Speed lands in movie theatres next March. In the meantime, DreamWorks has released a hard-charging, tire-squealing glimpse of the film on YouTube.

Rolls-Royce at the drive-in

In a reciprocal gesture 60 years in the making, the British have sent back across the Atlantic the 563-horsepower, 6.6-litre, twin-turbo Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended Wheelbase. It similarly pairs incomparable luxury with improbable speed, thanks to its combination of leather, wood and V12 muscle.
In an age when darty handling has displaced cushiness as the desired luxury-car behaviour, the term “boat” rings as an automotive pejorative, chasing most carmakers away from nautical analogies. But Rolls-Royce continues to embrace the land-yacht persona, touting proportions that intentionally recall a vintage mahogany Chris-Craft.
But how to introduce English royalty to workaday America?
As our colleagues at BBC Culture recently observed, there are few more traditionally American automotive activities than going to the drive-in to catch a double feature. Drive-ins were once commonplace, but today they belong to a specialised realm of nostalgia-inducing entertainments, not unlike vinyl records (and manual transmissions). Though every US city contained them a half-century ago, only the hardy few remain.
Among these is the Family Drive-In Theatre in Stephens City, Virginia, about a 90-minute drive from Washington DC, nestled in Virginia’s historic Shenandoah Valley. This particular drive-in dates from 1956, and the hospitality and low prices could convince visitors that little time has passed since.
Parking spaces that often accommodate pickup trucks and Chevy Suburbans were just the place to moor the Ghost for the evening. The Rolls stretches 219.3in, a scant 3in shorter than those Suburbans. While such proportions are not problematic at the drive-in lot, a pilot should take care not to mow down the speaker posts sprouting across the grounds. (It is considered poor form in rural Virginia to run over speaker posts in your Rolls-Royce.)
The view from the Ghost's front seat is splendid, unsurprisingly. In many cars back-seat viewing would be made difficult by the roof’s intrusion, but the Ghost's sofa-like rear seats position occupants low enough for a clear view of the screen through the windshield. Traditionalists mount a classic drive-in metal speaker to the window for audio. But with the Ghost’s 600-watt, 16-speaker sound system, tuning in Hollywood surround sound via the car’s radio dial seemed the more suitable choice.
Granted, few sounds emanating from those speakers could compete for sheer drama with the Ghost’s V12, which even sounds expensive on start-up, sparking to life with the high-speed whirr of a jet engine. On the trip west to the drive-in, flattening the accelerator made the Ghost assume the nose-high attitude of a powerboat climbing up on plane. In such moments the Rolls’ Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament sooner resembled a ship prow’s figurehead.
Of course, the hydraulically smooth V12 never betrayed any effort, despite its tremendous output and hefty load. The Ghost’s eight-speed automatic transmission also faded into the background, with the only discernable shifts coming when changing from forward to reverse gear.
The Ghost is a luxury liner and never fails to remind occupants of this truth. At highway speed the car shoulders aside the air with its bluff front, but passengers never notice, as no wind noise penetrates the Ghost’s vault-like sheet metal, and the car’s air shocks erase any bumps not flattened by the optional 20in tires.
The English White worn by this tester was complimented by Seashell-hued leather upholstery. The white-on-white layout underscored the Ghost’s extravagance; who could live with such a colour scheme? Children with a modicum of dirt on their jeans would be forbidden passage. Even better, only passengers in all-white ensembles would be allowed inside.
Maybe this was the Ghost’s arch way of conveying that it truly was intended for the yachting set. But as the Hollywood studios know, it sure is fun to play make-believe.

Mercedes-Benz reveals S63 AMG

Seems AMG has been busy of late, what with the new A45 and CLA45 both making their debuts in 2013, and now this, the crowning glory of the stunning new S-Class range (until the S65 arrives, of course).
And what a new S-Class it is. Smooth, confident, accomplished, packed to the rafters with technology and – as we found out when we drove it – better than ever before. This AMG version then, uses the same 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 doing the rounds in Merc's Big Cars – E63, CLS63, et al. – to great effect.
As mentioned, it gets 577hp and a whopping 664lb-ft of torque, which means it will out-accelerate a manual Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. That's genuine pace. The twin-turbo “M157” unit is hand-built by one man – as per AMG's rules – and comes complete with an aluminium crankcase, direct injection, an air-to-water intercooler and a lightweight composite oil pan.
Elsewhere on the new S63, you'll find an AMG sports exhaust with special flaps that automatically open and close depending on the transmission selection on the seven-speed ‘box. In “controlled efficiency” mode (“C”), they're closed, but switch over to “Sport” (“S”) or “Manual” (“M”) and you're highly likely to scare the neighbour's Labrador.
Oh, and like the new E63 AMG, the S63 is available as a four-wheel-drive, too, the 4Matic.
It's fitted with “magic body control” that – unfortunately – doesn't involve a miniature Paul Daniels on the dashboard telling you to slow down, but instead sensors that detect the road surface and adjust the suspension accordingly. “Comfort” and “Sport” modes are available for the chassis and steering, and you can work out what each one does.
Underneath the 19in lightweight alloy wheels (or optional forged alloy 20s) sit horrendously big carbon ceramic brake discs (420mm up front. 420mm!) that are “fade-resistant” and display “higher thermal stability”. We suspect energetic use of these brakes will display “higher intestinal instability”.
There's a new front apron and splitter, side sill panels with 3D inserts in silver chrome, lots of AMG lettering, a black rear diffuser with chrome trim and, of course, a pair of twin exhaust pipes. Inside there are new AMG sports seats, lots of lavish leather, an AMG sports steering wheel, TFT colour display and, erm, some more AMG lettering.
Naturally, you can lose quite a significant portion of your time flicking through the options list, which includes a chauffeur pack, a “first-class” rear suite, an air-balance pack, coloured calipers and AMG carbon fibre exterior/brake packs.
Prices to be confirmed in due course, closer to its sale date later this year. The previous generation cost just under £114k, so expect something similar.

End of the line for BMW’s mighty M3 Coupe

Since its auspicious 1985 debut, the BMW M3 Coupe has earned a degree of reverence that few sporting cars can claim.

And now, after four endlessly lauded generations, this famous moniker is history.
On 5 July, the final M3 Coupe, resplendent in fiery orange paint, rolled down the production line at BMW’s factory in Regensburg, Germany. But fret not, Bimmerphiles: a successor, dubbed M4 and based on BMW’srecently unveiled 4 Series, is set to arrive by the middle of 2014. It is certain to pick up where the overachieving E92 M3 Coupe left off. And in the meantime, the M3 Convertible carries on; production of the V8-powered droptop continues through September.

Volkswagen XL1: How does 261mpg feel?

Already pared down to a catalogue of lightweight, sophisticated components rendered from carbon fibre, magnesium and aluminium, the XL1 lacks those useful pieces of hardware that attentive drivers know as mirrors. Volkswagen compensates for this seeming handicap with two cameras integrated into each of the XL1’s butterfly-hinge doors, which gaze rearward along the car's flanks and send real-time video to two door-mounted cabin screens. The cameras also do a respectable job of capturing the rear view, eliminating the need for a mirror on the windshield.
The XL1 giveth and the XL1 taketh away, and this is the fundamental dynamic at work in VW’s 261mpg marvel. Get an Audi-calibre steering wheel, lose the power-assisted steering; get the lowest aerodynamic drag of any production car in the world, lose the side-view mirrors; get an injection-moulded, carbon-fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) substructure, lose any semblance of sound insulation. Such are the trade-offs in a time machine.
Because the XL1 is most assuredly from the future.
The diesel-electric hybrid was made available for brief drives on 25 June around Volkswagen’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, where the first examples emerged from a genesis that began in 2002 with the 1-Litre concept car. XL1s pictured here are among an initial run of 50, and VW has committed to building 250.
From any angle, the XL1 sooner evokes a 1930s streamliner locomotive than it does a passenger car. It perches on narrow Michelin tires, with rear wheels mounted to a shorter axle than those up front, imparting a gawkier, more nose-heavy stance than any other virtue-mobile on the road. The Toyota Prius is a car. The XL1 is a transporter.
Settling into one of the vehicle’s two carbon fibre seats – slightly offset to prevent shoulders from bumping – the sci-fi overtones soften. Here is a tight-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel, here a cluster of analogue gauges, here a radio scanner and climate control knobs. No question, you are in a car.
Drivers of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles would find nothing extraordinary about the XL1’s startup sequence. Press the start button and watch the gauges illuminate. Pull the dual-clutch transmission into gear, apply light throttle and the XL1 builds speed under purely electric power, albeit with half the alacrity of modestly powered EVs like the Nissan Leaf. Tromp on the accelerator and a .8-litre two-cylinder diesel engine joins in with a gurgle. When all electricity is spent after a manufacturer-estimated 31 miles, the diesel engine feeds power back into the battery.
The XL1 is in no hurry, but it keeps pace with traffic on the perimeter roads and roundabouts outside VW’s sprawling campus. The entire powertrain is housed mid-ships, so the driver senses engine and motor noise directly behind those handsome carbon fibre seats. If there is anything jarring about the XL1’s repertoire, it is the sandpaper-on-chalkboard clamour produced with every application of the ceramic disc brakes. A noise that the XL1 all but eliminates, though, is wind; at highway speeds, the loss of those aerodynamically unfriendly side-view mirrors never seems shrewder. Low-rolling-resistance Michelins do their best to fill the aural void, but they do not intrude to an unreasonable degree. The XL1 is a chatty little thing, yet you find yourself forgiving its faults because of that 261 number.
Volkswagen has tested the XL1 to 261mpg, a figure so gaudy that it recalibrates one’s conception of “good” fuel economy. In an industry quick to ballyhoo a 2mpg advantage over a competitor, the XL1’s fuel-economy rating is 500% better than that of a Toyota Prius C – a car deemed the greenest of 2013 by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. Not for nothing is a “1” in the XL1’s name.

Plenty of Bang at Silverstone as Rosberg Wins

SILVERSTONE, England — A series of exploding Pirelli tires turned the British Grand Prix into a spin of the roulette, as driver after driver — including an early leader — found his left-rear tire bursting at high speed.
Felipe Massa was left with the shredded remains of the left-rear  wheel of his Ferrari on Sunday during the race at Silverstone, England.
But it was a gearbox failure just 10 laps from the end that robbed Sebastian Vettel of a certain victory after he had led the race from Lap 9 onward in his Red Bull. That left Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes, who then was in second, to take the lead and hold it to the end.
It was the third victory of the German driver’s career, and his second this year after he won the Monaco Grand Prix last month.
“A fantastic race, and it was very special because it was a home Grand Prix for this team. The factory is just 10 minutes away,” said Rosberg, but he added of the tire failures: “That’s a problem: There were too many tire failures today and they must look into that and see what’s got to be done.”
The first victim of the tire fiasco was Rosberg’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, who started on pole position and led until his tire burst on Lap 8 and he returned to the pits on three tires to put on a new set.
On the following lap, Felipe Massa, then in fourth in a Ferrari, went skidding off the track with a burst left-rear tire. Then on Lap 15 the left-rear tire of Jean-Éric Vergne in a Toro Rosso burst while he was in sixth position.
During the morning practice on Saturday a tire had exploded on the McLaren Mercedes of Sergio Pérez. It was Pérez who became the fourth and final driver in the race to suffer an exploding left-rear tire, on Lap 46.
“It’s just unacceptable,” Hamilton said. “Someone could’ve crashed. I was thinking behind the safety car that it’s only when someone gets hurt that something will be done about it.”
Pérez agreed. “This is unacceptable. We are risking our lives and we shouldn’t wait until something happens to all of us,” he said.
Paul Hembery, the director of Pirelli’s motor sports program, said that he did not yet know the cause of the failures.
“Obviously today wasn’t foreseen,” Hembery said. “We’ve seen something new, a different type of problem.
“We’re currently performing our analysis,” he added “We’ve got to go away and understand what’s happened today. When we’ve got the facts we can understand what’s happened and get to the core of the issues. We take these things seriously.”
The chaos and frequent use of the safety car to allow track marshals to clean up the tire rubber from the track was good for some other drivers, however, and Mark Webber, who had a bad start in his Red Bull and dropped to the back of the pack, managed to climb up to finish in second place. Fernando Alonso, in a Ferrari, who started ninth, finished third.
Hamilton also fought back to finish fourth, and Kimi Raikkonen in a Lotus, finished fifth.
Vettel’s failure to score points breathed life back into a championship that he had begun to dominate. He now leads the series with 132 points, while Alonso is second with 111 points, and Raikkonen is third with 100 points. Hamilton and Webber are fourth and fifth with 87 points each, while Rosberg is sixth with 82 points. A victory is worth 25 points.
But the race itself was not just a lottery for the drivers, it became an emergency session for Pirelli and the team engineers to figure out how to deal with the bursting tire problem. When the safety car was deployed after Lap 15 to allow track marshals to clear the track of hundreds of bits of shredded rubber, there was a flurry of activity over the radios from the team engineers to their drivers.
Red Bull informed Webber that after Vettel’s first pit stop the team had found cuts in his left-rear tire, and they instructed the driver to keep off the curbs.
Rosberg’s engineer also warned him: “There has been a multitude of rear tire failures, it is happening when the tires are hot, when they are going over curbs.”
“We’re not sure if it is a tire problem or a curbing problem at this point,” an engineer said to Vettel. “So try to stay away from the curbs and try to preserve your rear-left tire.”
The biggest story of the 2013 Formula One season has been about the Pirelli tires and their quick wear creating challenges for the teams and drivers.
Although Pirelli said the failures on Sunday were a new problem, their tires had delaminated several times at previous races and the company had employed the help of the Mercedes team to fix the problem during a private test session in Barcelona after the Spanish Grand Prix in May. Because testing with the 2013 racing car and drivers is outlawed during the season, both Mercedes and Pirelli were reprimanded and Mercedes was excluded from a forthcoming test session for young drivers.
In 2005, when both Michelin and Bridgestone provided tires to teams, there was a fiasco at the United States Grand Prix when the teams with Michelin tires refused to race after the tires were found to be unsafe, after a couple of incidents earlier in the weekend. Only six of the cars — those using Bridgestone tires — raced, causing the spectators of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to request their money back.
After the race on Sunday resumed on Lap 22 when the safety car left the track, Vettel’s engineer again instructed: “Watch out for exit curbs, high speed corners, with your left-rear.”
With 30 laps left the race had become a question of who would be the next victim. Then, on Lap 29, Esteban Gutiérrez of the Sauber team had his left-front tire burst and he had to replace his tires, and also replace the front wing that the tire had damaged.
When Vettel pulled off the track slowly after 42 laps, the safety car again came out to remove his car from its unsafe position on the straight. The race started again at the beginning of Lap 46 in a final seven laps of close racing, and Webber finished only .7 second behind Rosberg.
“It’s quite disappointing to retire when we were only a few laps from the end,” Vettel said. “We had a gearbox issue, I think fifth gear broke and damaged the rest of the gearbox as well, so it was not possible to carry on.”

Light slap for Rosberg
Formula One stewards decided not to punish Nico Rosberg for an alleged flag infringement that might have cost him the victory, Reuters reported Sunday from Silverstone.
A spokesman for motor racing’s governing body, F.I.A., said that Rosberg had been reprimanded for failing to slow for yellow flags through turns three to five.
