The professional scan tool MaxiDiag PRO MD801 is able to work with global OBD II/EOBD compliant vehicles but also able to diagnose non-OBD II compliant vehicles. It is specially designed to read and clear trouble codes, and to retrieve ECU information of engine, automatic transmission, ABS and airbag systems for Asian, European and American vehicles.
For most pre-OBD II vehicles, they do not have standard 16-pin OBD II DLC (Data Link Connector). You need to have proper diagnostic connectorsto diagnose them.

My Personal Views on USB vs Hand Held OBD II Code Readers

As a typical  home mechanic, I enjoy working on my car and when I have the spare time I do whatever maintenance I can on it. I've had check engine lights come on before and have had the pleasure of using multiple types of OBD II code scanners in order to figure out what was wrong with my car.

The first one I used was one I found at Wal-Mart for $56 after tax and didn't do too much. It displayed the codes to me and I could browse the other codes and erase them. If I wanted to re-read the codes I would simply click a button again (a total of three buttons were on the reader) and it would display any codes again. That was it. For $56 I felt that this was a little too basic for me and all I needed it for was a one time read, so I took it back after I figured out what the codes meant, since the OBD II code reader didn't tell me.

Then, I tried a buddies ebay OBD II code reader. He didn't specifically say it was from ebay, but it was very much like the one I had, but smaller and a more tacky setup. He plugged it in and said it was weird because it had actually given him "F" before the codes, which he "never saw before" but if I had to guess, it simply meant that the code was FORD code (the codes can sometime vary between different makes of car) and considering I have a Mustang, that made sense to me. His code reader also decided to make up a P0000 code, which I couldn't find on any type of database nor manage to bring up on any other OBD II code scanner. However, it did let you scroll through the codes and clear them, much like the one I bought from ebay. Same basic setup and abilities, although I'm sure he paid about half of what I did for mine.

After I sent my friend on his way and fixed the problem (or so I thought) I managed to still have a code or two left (there were a few codes strung together due to an important fuse blowing) so I tried to find a cheap reader I could order. I wasn't going to drive my car again for a few days, so it could sit while I waited for the new one to come (and save $$$!). I searched ebay and found tons of the USB OBD II cables and decided, "Hey, if I can find some pretty good software, why not?!" so that's what I did. Even though the majority of the USB OBD II cables come with software, they are usually limited or trials. Also, the sellers are all Chinese sellers and if they're located in the U.S., I guarantee they are reselling the Chinese cables -- my seller was! The cable came pretty quick and I recommend you buy from a U.S. seller, although you'll pay more obviously, but that's up to you.

So the day came that I got my cable and I was thrilled. I checked out the included software and Googled all I could for free software and it seems that the free stuff you can get is very limited, usually to the point where you can't even clear the Check Engine Light, although it will tell you what the code is AND (drumroll please!) will tell you in plain English was the code means! What this means is that instead of seeing a P0307 code, it will tell you the code PLUS "Misfire on cyclinder #7" as that's what a P0307 code means, so there's no going inside on the computer to lookup what the code means which saves time, trouble and allows you to get to work immediately.

I managed to get a pretty nice program through a connection and I really like it. I can quickly and easily connect my USB OBD II cable right to the car from the computer and access any check engine light data (even pending codes), view live data, get an estimated 1/4 mile time, and even get HP/Torque readings (although the two latter seem to be a bit finicky and acquires some messing around with). Overall, for a mere $22 for the USB OBD II cable, I am very pleased with everything the software allows you to do and view. I bought my cable months ago and have used it constantly, even if it's just to help me monitor data, it's a great tool and I highly recommend it. However, if you don't have a newer laptop (or a laptop at all) I would stick with a hand-held one as it would probably be quicker and easier for you. It all depends what you need and want out of an OBD II code scanner or if you want tuning capabilities, which I haven't found any decent software for yet under the cost of $500, which you can just buy a custom tuner for your vehicle at that cost. It's up to you!

Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer rolls into Jay Leno's Garage

After waiting four years to drive the Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer, we finally got our chance to review it from behind the wheel earlier this year. Every auto writer is familiar with salivating over the chance to drive a vehicle that has stirred them from the moment they saw a picture of it, then being crushed when the drive turns out to be terrible - and this includes $300,000-plus hand-built supercars, too. The Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer was the antidote to that, going well beyond the abundant hopes we had for it.

It's pulled into Jay Leno's Garage for some time with Mr. Burbank, and Singer founder Rob Dickinson gives Leno a tour of the coupe's whats and whys: the early nineties 964 structure underneath the sixties 911 "Butzi" bodywork rendered in carbon fiber, the Cosworth-developed 3.8-liter engine with 350 horsepower, the quilted leather over the Firesafe fuel tank and matching luggage up front.

An important part of a vehicle’s OBD II system is the Readiness Monitors, which are indicators used to find out if all of the emissions components have been evaluated by the OBD II system. MB Carsoft 7.4 Software Installation Instruction

Thanks for purchasing the MB Carsoft 7.4 Car diagnostic device. Since the MB Carsoft 7.4 software is cracked, so you need to carefully follow below software installation instruction for making sure the MB Carsoft working properly.
MB Carsoft 7.4 Multiplexer
Step 1: Copy the whole Carsoft_MB74 File folder from the software driver CD to your hard-disk driver D or other hard driver. It is more stable and reliable to install the MB Carsoft software from hard-disk directly. Step 2: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder of “Step1_MB74_Installer”, double click “SETUP CAR SOFT.exe” to run the MB Carsoft software installation part 1.
Step 3: The MB Carsoft software installation proceeds automatically, click “Next” button for software installation when you see the MB Carsoft V7.4 Welcome surface.
Step 4: The MB Carsoft software installation asking about Software License Agreement, click “Yes” button to proceed the MB Carsoft V7.4 software installation
Step 5: The MB Carsoft software installation asking about directory in your hard-disk, you can change the directory or keep the default directory “C:\Program Files\CARSOFT\MB as it is, then click “Next” button to proceed the MB Carsoft V7.4 software installation
Step 6: The MB Carsoft software installation asking about the name of this program, you can change the program name or keep the default name “CARSOFT” as it is, then click “Next” button to proceed the MB Carsoft V7.4 software installation
Step 7: The MB Carsoft V7.4 program will be installed into your computer automatically..
Step 8: After the MB Carsoft program be installed in your computer, you need to click “Finish” button and select the column of “Restart computer” to finish the software installation part 1, then restart your computer for system recognizing on the MB Carsoft device.
Step 9: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder of “Step2_ST2”, double click “MBv74Stage2e.exe” to continue the MB Carsoft software installation part 2.
Step 10: After you click “MBv74Stage2e.exe” to continue the MB Carsoft software installation part 2, the Carsoft – MB V7.4 Stage II Installation surface will be shown up, then click “Start” button to proceed software installation part 2.
Step 11: Then the software installation surface will shown up “Carsoft MB V7.4 Stage II Installed successfully…”, click “Close” button to finish the software installation part 2.
Step 12: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder of “Step3_ST2SP1”.
Step 13: In the file holder of “Step3_ST2SP1”, you may find “MBV742SP01E.exe”, double click “MBV742SP01E.exe” to continue the MB Carsoft software installation part 3.
Step 14: After you click “MBV742SP01E.exe” to continue the MB Carsoft software installation part 3, the Carsoft – MB V742 SP01 Installation surface will be shown up, then click “Start” button to proceed software installation part 3.
Step 15: Then the software installation surface will shown up “Searching Carsoft files…”, then there is a dialog window shows up “Necessary files not found, (please install MB V7.4 Sate II first)”, just click “Confirm” button to finish the software installation part 3.
Step 16: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder of “Step4_ST2SP1_crack”, copy all 6 files in this holder,
Step 17: Then paste all those 6 new files into the file holder of “cm70f” at directory C:\cm70f\ (this directory was created during the MB Carsoft software installation automatically). The system will ask you if you want to replace old file during pasting those 6 new files into the file holder “cm70f”, click “Yes” button to replace all
old files by those cracked 6 new files in “cm70f” file holder.
Step 19: Also, copy all 6 files from the file holder of “Step4_ST2SP1_crack”holder, and paste all those 6 new files into the file holder of “MB” at directory C:\Program Files\CARSOFT\MB as well, similar to step 17 - 18, you need to replace all old files by those cracked 6 new files in the “MB” file holder too.
Step 20: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder “Step5_crack_other_files”. There are 2 files “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” and “MB 7.4crack.exe” in this file holder.
Step 21: Copy “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” file from the file folder “Step5_crack_other_files”, then paste this “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” file into the file holder of “cm70f” at directory C:\cm70f\.
Step 22: After you pasted the “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” file into the file holder of “cm70f” at directory C:\cm70f\ , then double click “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” to run this cracking program..
Step 23: The “CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” program will show up a dialog window, click “PATCH” button to proceed.
Step 24: After you clicked the “PATCH” button, there is a directory selecting window shown up, select file “CARSOFT74MC.exe” from the file holder of “cm70f” at directory C:\cm70f\, click “Open” button to proceed cracking the MB Carsoft 7.4 program.
Step 25: After you clicked the “Open” button, the “CARSOFT74MC.exe” file will be cracked, and a “Crack
successful” dialog window will be shown up, then click “Confirm” button.
Step 26: In the hard-disk driver where you pasted the whole Carsoft_MB74 software, please open the File
folder of Carsoft_MB74, then open the file holder “Step5_crack_other_files”. There are 2 files
“CARSOFT74MC Crack.exe” and “MB 7.4crack.exe” in this file holder. Copy “MB 7.4crack.exe” file from
the file holder “Step5_crack_other_files”, then paste this “MB 7.4crack.exe” file into the file holder of “MB”
at directory C:\Program Files\CARSOFT\MB.
Step 27: After you pasted the “MB 7.4crack.exe” file into the file holder of “MB” at directory C:\Program
Files\CARSOFT\MB, then double click “MB 7.4crack.exe” to run this cracking program. Similar to step 23 to
step 25, the “MB 7.4crack.exe” program will show up a dialog window, click “PATCH” button to proceed.
Step 28: After you clicked the “PATCH” button, there is a directory selecting window shown up, select file
“mb.exe” from the file holder of “MB” at directory C:\Program Files\CARSOFT\MB, click “Open” button to
proceed cracking the MB Carsoft 7.4 program.
Step 29: After you clicked the “Open” button, the “MB.exe” file will be cracked, and a “Crack successful”
dialog window will be shown up, then click “Confirm” button to finish the whole cracking procedure.

Step 30: Then you can run the MB Carsoft 7.4 program now, click “Star” button at the left corner, select
“Programs” menu, then select “CARSOFT” holder, click “Mercedes” to run the MB Carsoft program.
Step 31: Then you can see the MB Carsoft Diagnostic program surface, click “Star MB V7.4S” button to go
ahead the MB Carsoft program.
Step 32: Then you can apply full functions of MB Carsoft Diagnostic program with the hardware together.

You can write new program with any tool you want. Manufacturer's service workshop can do all diagnosis and even write upgraded version of program into ECU. But nobody can read your work via OBD or CAN.
After reading original file from car and making chip file from it, protection using ECUsafe may be applied. Protected file may be written into ECU using your flash tool (if it
calculates file checksum while writing) or you must calculate checksum in external program and then write it into ECU .
As a result file stored in ECU cannot be read anymore. Diagnosis protocols are working normally (you can do identification of ECU, diagnosis of error codes, etc etc). ECU can be
re-written with any file using your tool (so factory diagnosis systems can upgrade program in ECU, if applicable). ECU cannot be read. Diagnosis protocols work normally.
All CAN and K-line reading systems will fail to read file from ECU. They can only write (and thus - overwrite your file). To re-enable reading file from ECU, it must be
overwritten with non-protected file (file without ECUsafe protection).

Wacky Jaguar crossover mule is a mind-blowing mashup

As Jaguar prepares to introduce its first-ever utility vehicle, our spy shooters have captured this jacked-up XF mule out testing. While a production Jaguar crossover will surely resemble something closer to the recent C-X17 Concept, we can't help but think that the automaker could sell at least a few of these lifted, four-wheel-drive sedans.

Other than proving that Jaguar is hard at work developing this new model using a cobbled-together body, there are some details we can put together about this luxury CUV. For one it's about the same length as an XF, while the ride height is obviously taller and the tire track wider. We're not sure what the rig on top of this mule is for, but the whole car has us reminiscing about the old sedan versions of the Subaru Outback and the AMC Eagle (with a luxury spin, of course).

Rebuilding Fuller’s Dymaxion

Some concept cars influence decades of automotive engineering. Some concepts never catch on. Some simply catch fire.
The Dymaxion car, designed by the visionary US architect and all-round polymath R Buckminster Fuller, may be the rare prototype for which all of these things are true.

“It’s full of unique and different technologies,” says Jeff Lane, director of the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. “It was a failure commercially, but it tried lots of different things that have had big influence on car design.” It was a big enough influence on Lane that, 80 years later, he’s in the final stages of recreating Fuller’s first prototype.

When the first zeppelin-shaped vehicle debuted in 1933, it broke every automotive design convention save the use of round wheels. Nearly 20 feet (6.1 metres) long, it could transport 11 people and return 30mpg thanks to wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamics and lightweight aluminium-skin construction. Its engine was rear-mounted but powered the front wheels, and it was steered with a single back wheel, a less-than-intuitive arrangement that may have contributed to a fatal crash that occurred during its demonstration at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair.

In Fuller’s lifetime, three Dymaxions were built. The first – the one that crashed – later burned. No 3 was sold for scrap sometime in the 1950s. The lone surviving original ( No 2) was abandoned to a farmer’s barn before ending up at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada. A fourth car, based on the badly damaged second car, was completed in 2010 by British architect Norman Foster, a onetime acolyte of Fuller.

Lane’s model is a recreation of the very first prototype, which had one door, no moving windows and a single headlight. Lane and his team of designers analysed photographs and news reports, bills of materials and 80 different drawings made for the manufacturing process. “We’ve got plans for 12 different swing arms, and some drawings have no numbers so we don't know which prototype they belong to,” says Lane. He has discovered details missing from the No 4 recreation, among them a work order for a belly plate, something he believes the streamline-obsessed Fuller wouldn’t have omitted from the design.

“We’ve been at this for four years,” Lane says. The chassis was built in Pennsylvania, and running gear was further refined at the Lane Museum. Then the car was sent to the Czech Republic where the wooden frame and aluminium skin were fabricated by an expert in World War I-era aircraft restoration. The car is being finished in the Czech Republic by Eccora, a coachbuiding and restoration firm.

“Fuller was not a car designer, but more of a tinkerer and a marketer,” notes Lane. The first assertion is obvious from the continual evolution of plans for the Dymaxion. The second is clear from Fuller’s claims that the car could reach 120mph (193kph) – though the 1933-4 Ford flathead V8 engine and its unmodified differential would have limited it to 75mph on the top end.

Lane drove the chassis around for testing (at nowhere near its projected top speed) during an early phase of the reconstruction. Trying to merge onto a roadway posed a particular problem. “You’ve got to start steering before you start moving, and that tail tends to move into the other lane,” he said, adding that it was a bit like driving a 20ft-long forklift.

Lane hopes to be driving the finished Dymaxion in Tennessee in late 2014.

The 4C’s time is sufficient to land it the record for cars producing less than 250hp.
The 4C is now rolling into Alfa Romeo showrooms in Europe; pricing in its homeland starts at 53,000 euros. The car arrives in the US – via Maserati dealerships – roundabout the middle of 2014, likely priced close to $55,000.

The steps of programming car keys

The steps of programming car keys were first introduced in the 1990s as an extra means of convenience and security for vehicles.
Also known as chip keys and transponder keys, these must be programmed to an individual vehicle before they can be used to start TMS370 Programmer. Only the transponder key will activate your car, and the key can only be programmed from the car itself. You can program a key in about 30 minutes.
Enter your vehicle with the key you want to program and insert the key into the ignition.
Turn the key to the "On" position and leave MaxiDiag PRO MD801 there for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
Turn the key to the "Off" position within 45 seconds of finishing step 2, and then turn it back to the "On" position for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
Turn the key "Off" again within 45 seconds, and then "On" again for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
Turn the key "Off" and then back "On." The OBDBook 6830 should be completed and the key ready to use.
