The new Mercedes CLA250 borrows from the familiar

evidently Mercedes-Benz product planners glimpse this as a salient strategy for growth, as the company's flashy new CLA rips a sheet right out of its larger CLS's publication. The CLS, the initial "four-door coupe”, has generated so many imitators since its 2004 debut that it is only fair, Mercedes should be permitted to copy it, too.

On the eve of the 2013 Detroit auto display, Mercedes disclosed its plan for recruiting a new lifetime of customers to the three-pointed star, and it took the pattern of a racy, nominally inexpensive compact sedan.

The CLA, like the CLS, characteristics a reduced, slanting roofline and four doors with frameless windows in the kind of a coupe. But as anyone who has viewed the CLS from the back chair, the conceive asks for back travellers to bang their heads on the doorframe throughout ingress and egress.

Those lines do look slippery; according to Mercedes, the CLA's 0.23 coefficient of pull, a assess of aerodynamics, is the lowest number ever for a output form.

The car also breaks ground as Mercedes' first front-wheel-drive form for the US market. In an interview after its introduction on 13 January, Dieter Zetsche, head person of Daimler, the Mercedes parent, notified BBC Autos that the CLA was founded on the same front-drive stage used by the diminutive A-Class and B-Class hatchbacks in other markets.

"The US market isn't very fond of hatchbacks, as we are in Europe, so this vehicle should be well-received", he surmised.

The outcome is very close to the Acura TSX in size and specification, and it is juvenile drivers who grew up with front drive that the company is aiming at with the CLA, which will start for less that $30,000 when it proceeds on sale in September. An all-wheel-drive 4Matic type will pursue in 2014, as will a more powerful twin-turbocharged engine.

While the CLA has an entry-level luxury cost, all of the anticipated Mercedes expertise is present. A collision-alert radar system is benchmark equipment, along with a 5.8-inch infotainment display.

Power is from a 208 horsepower, 2-litre 4-cylinder motor driving the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. A 2.2-litre diesel engine is accessible for Europe, but is a long shot for the US, Zetsche said. The car's base motor in Europe will be a smaller-displacement gasoline motor evolved in joint venture with Renault and Nissan, he added.

if the CLS can, like Bowie, top the journals recycling vintage concepts continues to be glimpsed, but Zetsche is undaunted. "We not ever talk about future volume," he said, "but we are very assured this vehicle will be a success.”

ELM 327 function and some old product

ELM 327 purposes:

1.Read diagnostic trouble ciphers, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and brandish their significance (over 3000 generic cipher delineations in the database).
2.Clear problem codes and turn off the MIL ("Check motor" lightweight)
3.Display present sensor data, encompassing:
4.Engine RPM
5.Calculated burden Value
6.Coolant warmth
7.Fuel System Status
8.Vehicle Speed
9.Short period Fuel Trim
10.Long period Fuel Trim
11.Intake Manifold force
12.Timing Advance
13.Intake Air warmth
14.Air Flow Rate
15.Absolute Throttle Position
16.Oxygen sensor voltages/associated short period fuel trims
17.Fuel scheme status
18.Fuel force
19.Many other functio of ELM327....

The older product:
The ELM320 allows you to converse to your 41.6KHz J1850 PWM protocol vehicle through a standard RS232 serial attachment, using only simple ASCII instructions. This facts and figures protocol was routinely used in numerous Ford engine Company vehicles (but is now being restored by CAN).
The facts and figures sheet displays how to attach this IC into a reduced cost circuit which presents all the functionality of a scan device that cost considerably more. Once constructed, a simple fatal submission, and possibly a USB to RS232 converter are all that are needed to converse' to your vehicle. You need only send a couple of easy keyboard instructions (ascii individual features) and all the data formatting, mistake checking, bus arbitration, etc. is then managed by the ELM320 for you.
If you presently use one of our v1.x ICs, you will be pleased to know that this version (v2.0) is pin-compatible with your IC (the only distinction is that linefeeds are now on by default). If your IC is mounted in a socket, you can easily unplug the vintage IC and close in the new.

Similar to the ELM320, the ELM322 is for connecting to an OBDII equipped vehicle which uses the 10.4KHz J1850 VPW format. This standard is typically used in General engines company and some (Daimler) Chrysler vehicles.
As with all of our OBD ICs, the client need only issue the yearned instructions through an RS232 serial attachment and the facts and figures formatting, mistake ascertaining, bus arbitration, etc. on the vehicle side is taken care of by the ELM322. This allows experimenters to inexpensively conceive their own scan device.

If you presently use one of our v1.x ICs, you will be pleased to know that this type (v2.0) is pin-compatible with the vintage, so you can easily replace your IC if you desire to upgrade.

Five tips for getting rest on a red-eye

Everyone loathes a red-eye. A necessary evil on nearly every cross-ocean, and oftentimes cross-country traverse, red-eyes are those pesky flights that depart late in the evening, fly during the pre-dawn hours and have become a regular addition to nearly every airline’s schedule. In the early days, airports were not adequately equipped to accommodate these flights, from limited airport staff to a lack of runway lighting to restrictions on noise, but with the increasing need to shuttle aircraft to their next route, seats were made available at deeply discounted rates for passengers willing to make the inconvenient trek.
While they are no longer consistently cheaper than any other departure time, red-eye flights typically travel east, allowing business travellers to travel overnight, arrive in an earlier timezone in the morning and not lose a full day of business activity. The irony of course is at the heart of the red-eye, a slang term used to describe the fatigued eyes often plaguing overnight flyers. With most red-eyes lasting only four or six hours – well under the recommended seven to eight – many are unable to get the appropriate amount of sleep before arriving at their destination.
So what can you do to get more rest on a red-eye?
Avoid alcohol prior to the flight
A recommendation for nearly any flight, alcohol increases your body temperature, brings on dehydration and wreaks havoc on your ability to get a little shut eye. Stick with water and grab a bottle in the terminal before your flight.
Request a window seat
Tucked out of the way when passengers are making a move to the bathroom or while attendants flit about in the aisles, a window seat offers your best chance for rest during a red-eye. Children and families are generally seated at the back of the plane, so if you are serious about sleeping, request a seat towards the front.
Never leave home without a sleep mask and a set of earplugs
Whether sleeping through unexpected hotel renovations or drowning out the sound of your snoring seatmate, earplugs and a sleep mask  are your best bet to getting a good night’s sleep while travelling. The mask makes it easy to block out sunlight, while earplugs do the same for any unwanted noise.
Pack a pair of socks
It is amazing how much of a difference removing your shoes can make during a flight – but no one appreciates the scent your weary feet. Pack an extra pair of socks in your carry on to relax and keep warm during your overnight flight.
Stick to your usual routine
Some folks indulge in a little late night snack or glass of warm milk. Others have to get in a few pages of the latest sci-fi thriller before they can close their eyes. Whatever your usual pre-bedtime routine, adhere to it, and your usual bedtime, as much as possible. In addition to the pillows and blankets generally provided by the airline, red-eye flight attendants are often sympathetic to passengers travelling through the night, so if a second pillow or glass of water will make the journey that much easier, be sure to ask.

Would you buy an Aston Martin plug-in ‘huubrid?’ German auto parts juggernaut Bosch hopes so

Would you buy an Aston Martin plug-in ‘huubrid?’ German auto parts juggernaut Bosch hopes so

What you’re looking at above is the first-ever Aston Martin Huubrid (watch the video below) plug-in hybrid built by German auto parts juggernaut Bosch.
The car is a radical concept car that started life as an Aston Martin DB9 and was converted over to 6.0-liter V12 plug-in hybrid, making it the first all-wheel drive Aston ever. With 740 horsepower, the hybridized DB9 can make a 0-62 sprint around 20 percent faster than the 4.2-second stock version, according to Motor Authority. Intriguingly, the hybrid DB9 only weighs 660 pounds more than the stock unit.
Bosch built the plug-in Aston to prove that modular hybrid technology can be achieved – as can eco-friendly supercars.
Bosch added some lithium-ion battery packs and two electric motors to the DB9. The stock V12 powers the rear wheels while the new electric motors power the front. As you might expect, the front motors can accelerate and brake each wheel individually, improving handling. The system is extremely precise. It will even take into account the number of passengers in the car and the tire temperature when calculating power flow.
Bosch didn’t just fiddle with the mechanical bits; it also added a touch-screen display on the inside so the driver can monitor the vehicle power flow, indicating which wheels were powering the vehicle, and watch the status of the battery charge levels.
While we had a good giggle with the video host’s pronunciation of the word “hybrid,” we’re rather glad someone other than McLaren or Ferrari is putting plug-in hybrid technology into a supercar application.
Will Aston Martin take the hint and build one of its own?
We can only hope.

thank you for your view.

Restored cars shine at PHS auto show

PORTSMOUTH — Peter Geremia of Rye bought his 1928 Model A Ford leatherback about 35 years ago with the plan to restore it.

"There were some kids who wanted to make it into a hot rod and I saved it from that," Geremia said Sunday.
However, the car sat in his barn for about the next 30 years, before he started the total restoration project about five years ago.
"It took four years, seemingly every waking moment I had," Geremia said.
But, the burgundy Model A with running boards and a wooden interior that he painstakingly restored, drew admirers on Sunday at the second annual car show held by the Portsmouth High School Automotive Technology program.
Asked how many hours it took to restore the car — which included removing the bodies of about 30 petrified mice — Geremia just shook his head and said, "It took a lot of hours. I can't begin to tell you how many."
Geremia was just one of the about 50 vintage car owners and restorers who participated in car show at the high school.
The show, which had drawn several hundred people by early Sunday afternoon despite the Father's Day holiday, is the brainchild of Portsmouth High School automotive technology teacher Dave Lilly.

Lilly took over the program two years ago, and after some of his students spent the entire year working with him to restore his 1969 GTO, they decided to hold the first event last year.
"It was really a thing to celebrate the end of the year and to bring in some of these vintage cars like the one they worked on," Lilly said.
Asked what it meant to restore a classic car like the GTO, Lilly smiled and said, "We did everything, from top to bottom."

He noted his students are still attracted to the same type of cars high school students have always been attracted to.
"It's just like when we were in high school," Lilly said. "Kids love the muscle cars."
After restoring the Pontiac GTO last year, he and about a dozen of his students spent the entire school year restoring a 1964 Chevrolet pickup truck. Students from the construction trade classes helped restore the wooden bed in the back of the truck, Lilly said.
"When we got it, it was a red farm truck," Lilly said as he walked around what is now a gleaming white pickup that was surrounded by onlookers Sunday.
He said having his students work on the vintage cars gives them a good foundation when it comes to working on more modern cars.

"Today's cars are more complicated when it comes to the electronics, but the basics of the mechanics are all the same," Lilly said. "By working on a truck like this, they learn how to do the basics."
Lilly said he is hopeful that some of his students will be inspired enough by their work that they go into the automotive field, but even if they don't, they have gained valuable experience.
"They've all gotten some real good hands-on knowledge about how cars work," Lilly said.
Asked if he has decided on what car to restore next year, Lilly shook his head.
"We just finished this one," he said. "We'll figure out what to do, how to fund it and then we'll hit the ground running."
Ron Spinney of Kittery Point, Maine, spent part of Sunday fielding questions as he sat in his restored orange and white 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air.
He bought the car about a year ago and began restoring it.
"I just fell in love with the car," he said.

He also has three Corvettes that he has restored.
"I like the old cars," he said.
Spinney said he also liked the idea of participating in the auto show.
"One of the students gave me a pamphlet and I decided to do it," Spinney said. "I was worried that we might not get a good crowd because it's Father's Day, but we've got a lot of people here. It's a fun day."

Car Free Day, Union Street, Vision Vancouver, bike lanes, Point Grey Road, anti-car agenda

Car Free Days are hardly car free
I am all for supporting the community and building neighbourly relationships but I think that doing this under the guise of Car Free Days is false advertising.
I live one block east of Main Street and, yet again, the car-free-ness is completely lost on me. Granted, increased traffic through the side streets is expected, thanks to closing down Main Street for the festivities, but I have never seen the side streets so busy or jam-packed with parked cars, save maybe for last year’s Car Free Day.
The common joke is “if you drive to Car Free Day, you’re doing it wrong!” Yes, it’s funny at a glance, but when the majority of people just laugh as they finish parking their cars on their way to Car Free Day, something is terribly wrong.
This is a huge inconvenience for people who actually live in the area. Street festivals are a great and excellent way to foster community support. But don’t sugar coat it, it needs a new name, as “car free” it is not.
Maxim Kinakin, Vancouver

Car free on Father’s Day
What a kick in the crotch for older fathers: hold a Car Free Day on Father’s Day!
Not all fathers are in their 20s and 30s; some are even grandfathers! Could it be that the organizers don’t know their fathers?
Mac Savage, Surrey

Editorial is silly
Your editorial on Vision’s bike agenda is a bit silly and misinformed. I can’t imagine a worse example of the “straw that broke the camel’s back” than the 200-block of Union Street.
Drivers have 12th, Broadway, Great Northern Way, Terminal, Venebles, Hastings and Powell for major east-west travel in the area. Union street, 10th, and a path on the shoulder of Great Northern Way are the east-west bicycle routes. In no way does increased cycling safety this short bit of Union impede the major flow of traffic.
Charles Freeman, Vancouver

Vision has bad priorities
It seems that Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and his Visionaries have made downtown and the West End their pet project.
From the bike lanes that choke traffic with idling cars, to butchering Comox Street for an unnecessary bike lane, to “greening up” our laneways and adding laneway homes, all the while extinguishing much needed parking as they go along with their anti-car agenda.
Now they’re expanding to Union Street, and they are still contemplating putting in a doomed bike-share program in Stanley Park paid by taxpayers, while likely wiping out bike-rental businesses.
Many probably don’t know they are putting electric-car charging stations on English Bay because God knows what we need more than more bike lanes are chargers for all those “e-cars” we have in Vancouver.
Maybe someone out there can pry the secret city financials out of Penny Ballem’s overpaid hands, so we can see how deeply in debt Vancouver truly is. Yes people, we can fight city hall, if only they would give us more than their usual two-week notices.
Debbie Moreau, Vancouver

Bike lanes are passe
Bicycles are in the past. We need rollerblading lanes.
Chris Houghton, Surrey

Quit slagging cyclists
Your editorial board has used every opportunity to slag the cycling community.
For the most part, cyclists are responsible citizens doing their best to reduce the impact on health and the environment caused by over reliance on automobiles. I would like to understand the reason for your antipathy; perhaps a bike protest delayed a pub booze-up for your staff.
Bikes are the logical alternative to the mayhem caused by inner city traffic. Despite your continual carping, cycling is on the increase. Get used to it.
Edward Simpkins, Burnaby

Anti-car agenda
It’s about time that Vancouver voters took notice of the Vision war on cars disguised as promotion of the use of bicycles.
Bike riders can use any route or street without restriction and most options are safer than utilizing even the barricaded routes promoted by Vision.
In addition, what cyclist would go blocks out of their way to use the bike lanes on arterial routes, which are designed to move heavy vehicular traffic efficiently.
The Point Grey Road proposal is a two-fold diversion — a sop to landowners who want more privacy while meeting the demands of the cycling crowd.
Voters can now assess their true intent, i.e., a naked ambition to gridlock the city.
Rick Angus, Vancouver

Money well spent
Media and citizens have been going crazy over the cost of the three bike lanes: $3 million. Here are some more costs to put into the equation: The left-turn lane at Knight and 33rd cost $3.4 million, and the Highway 1 widening project cost almost $2.4 billion.
After looking at these numbers, I must conclude that this investment in healthier people and more lively community for an area with over 2,000 bikes a day is a bargain.

The Fix Is In: New Jersey Has Costliest Car Repairs

A bumper crop of parts-and-labor cost increases has made the Garden State the most expensive
state when it comes to having your car fixed. With an average total diagnostics-and-repair bill of
$392.99, New Jersey ascended to No. 1 in 2012 from No. 10 a year earlier on CarMD.com
Corp.'s annual state-by-state ranking of car-repair costs, the California-based consumer-
information provider announced today.

New Jersey was in good company, though; the repair-cost trend in 2012 generally moved from
west to east while associated expenses nationwide headed north, as motorists' attention to their
check-engine lights went south. Whereas the western U.S. accounted for all five of the top states
with the highest repair costs in 2011, Eastern states including New Jersey, North Carolina and
Maryland, as well as the District of Columbia, dominated the top five in 2012, with California
being the lone West Coast representative. Overall, repair costs across the nation related to
vehicles' check-engine lights averaged $367.84, a 10% increase; the Northeast saw the greatest
increase among regions, at nearly 11.6%, while the West rose just more than 6.5%. CarMD cited
vehicle owners' procrastination in having repairs made, particularly catalytic converters, as a
major reason for the increases as delayed repairs become more expensive as problems worsen.
CarMD gleaned its state-by-state ranking from an analysis of more than 161,000 check-engine-
related repairs made on model-year 1996-2012 vehicles in 2012. "In 2012, we saw a dramatic
shift in the top five most expensive states for average car repairs, as many drivers along the East
Coast incurred rising auto-repair costs, while they simultaneously contended with Hurricane
Sandy's aftermath," CarMD said in a statement. "Car owners in many states also continued to put
off small repairs, contributing to cumulative failures with increased repair costs."
CarMD says Hurricane Sandy is the reason why New Jersey car owners doubled the number of
trips they made to the service station, initially for flood damage but later for unrelated problems
discovered during those trips that led to repairs previously put off. As a result, New Jersey
drivers saw a nearly 21% increase in labor rates and an 8.2% increase in parts costs. They also
paid more for catalytic converter replacement at $1,112.48; catalytic converter repairs were the
second most common reason the check-engine light came on in three of the five states with the
highest repair costs, CarMD reported.
Other key findings:
The most affordable state for auto repair is Vermont, the only Northeastern state to enjoy a
decline in average costs in 2012.
The District of Columbia saw the largest overall increase in repair costs, up 20%, as time-
consuming procedures costing more than $1,000 overtook quick fixes with smaller price tags.
Wyoming had the greatest drop in average repair costs, at 17%, in part attributed to fewer
catalytic converter replacements.
Vermont also had the lowest average labor cost, at $115.90, though still more than a $25 increase
from 2011; Colorado's $150.75 was the highest average labor cost.
New Jersey motorists paid the most for parts on average ($256.28) while Vermont again enjoyed
the national low of $153.82.

The Car Repairs You Can (Seriously) Do Yourself, Despite Your Abilities

Car repairs can drain your pocketbook fast, but you can do a wide range of repairs yourself, regardless of your technical skill. We're not just talking oil changes; provided you can hold a wrench, you can fix everything ranging from fuel filters to alternators. We'll detail the tools necessary for your DIY toolkit, where to turn to for help when you're making the repairs, and how to tackle some of the most common car problems yourself.

The biggest hurdle in convincing someone they can handle car repair is the fear factor, but here's the thing: It's actually pretty hard to permanently screw up a car. You might break something temporarily, or a fix might not work in the long run, but you probably won't set yourself or your car on fire just because you banged too hard on a valve. Cars are resilient machines and regardless of the year or make, there are plenty of repairs even the clumsiest and technically challenged can handle provided they have the confidence to push through.
The Free Tech That Will Help You on Your Way
For a little background, I didn't own a car for about eight years, and before that, I had a small car I barely had the sense to put gas in, let alone repair anything on. Then, a couple years ago, I was handed down a small truck. Within the first couple weeks, a hose connection leading to the radiator cracked. I took a picture of the part that seemed to be leaking, walked into an auto parts store, showed it to them, and they found the replacement part for me. Twenty minutes later it was in and the truck was working again. Since then, I've helped friends with a wide range of repairs so I could learn more and practice.
For DIY repairs, your computer is your friend. AutoMD and Expert Village are both excellent resources of general purpose videos, how-to guides, and diagnostic assistance for the most common car problems. AutoMD also has an iPhone app with guides optimized for mobile viewing. If you need help deciding if a repair is worth your time, RepairPal is an excellent resource for checking the average cost of repairs in a shop and can help you decide if it's worth the time and effort to do it yourself.
As for the repair work, consider your phone, tablet, or computer the manual. Bring it out to the car with the video guide loaded up or the walkthrough in front of you. Watch and read over the directions several times so you feel comfortable, but keep your technology ready in case you need to reference a step. Take a picture of the section you're going to work on with your phone or a digital camera before you start so you know exactly how the engine is supposed to look if you get lost in the directions. If you feel like you need paper, you can always print directions or purchase your car's official guide.
For this guide, you can watch the videos embedded within or find step-by-step text instructions linked at the end of each section.
The Common Tools You Need and How to Shop for New Parts
Every car is different, but the myth foreign cars require special tools isn't exactly true. Nearly all cars use basic nuts and bolts for the most common repairs you need to make. Here's a short list of what you typically need:
Adjustable wrench
Torque wrench
Socket and ratchet set
Pliers
Phillips and flat head screwdrivers
Jack (usually included with your car)
There's no real secret to picking out tools, but they need to have a good grip. Buy tools with hefty handles.
You will also need to purchase new parts for your car if you're doing a replacement. If you purchase these from an auto parts store online, you will enter your car's year, make, and model into a form before searching for the part you need. If you're unsure of the technical name for a part, you can find the part number on the piece in your car, or you can head into a parts store for expert advice. Every car is slightly different, so make sure you enter the correct information to get the correct part and always hold onto your receipt in case it doesn't match up.
Replace a Broken or Worn Drive Belt

How to know when to replace your drive belts: If your car squeals when you start it or when you use certain accessories, it might be a drive belt. You can quickly give the car a visual inspection and check the belts for cracks, wear, and looseness. Even if you're not hearing noises, if the belt is cracked or worn, it's best to replace it. If it's loose, you might need to tighten it up instead of replace it.
Terms you need to know
Drive Belt: A drive belt is the rubber belt that connects and loops around pulleys on the your car's engine and is located at the front of the engine. These belts typically control accessories like the cooling system, battery charging, windshield wipers, and power steering. In older cars, you may find multiple belts for each system, but newer cars often use a belt called a serpentine belt, which is a single belt that loops through all of your car's systems. When working properly, you will not hear or notice the belt's existence, but if it's starting to fail, you will hear a loud squealing sound.
Serpentine Belt: The serpentine belt is the main drive belt in new vehicles. It wraps around several of your cars components instead of individual systems.
Pulleys: These are the small wheels with grooved rims the belt wraps around. When force is exerted, they spin, giving power to the systems they're attached to.
Tensioner pulley: A tensioner helps the pulleys work properly by allowing you to adjust the tightness of the belt in one place. Belts often stretch over use, so this keeps the system tight so belts don't fall off.
Tools you need: Ratchet, sockets, wrenches, screwdriver
How to replace a drive or serpentine belt yourself (step-by-step guide).
Replace Your Battery and Alternator
How to know your alternator or battery needs replacement: If your car isn't turning over and your accessories aren't powering on, two possible culprits are the battery and the alternator. You can test your alternator and your your battery with a multimeter to see if either are dead. If one of them isn't measuring enough power with the multimeter, you will need to replace it. If you have trouble locating your battery or alternator, your car's manual will include a chart with their location. If you left lights on overnight, your battery might just need a jump, so make sure you know how to jump a car. If your battery or alternator have failed, a jump start will often work to at least get you home.
Terms you need to know
Alternator: The alternator is the device that works with your battery to generate power for the electrical parts of your vehicle. An alternator is almost always found near the front of the engine, with a belt connected to the front.
Battery: The battery is usually a large black box found near the front of a vehicle that supplies the initial power to the alternator. It is connected to your car with positive and negative terminals.
Multimeter: To test and replace a battery or alternator, you'll want a digital multimeter. A multimeter measures electrical properties like current and resistance. You'll use this to test your battery and your alternator to figure out which is causing the problems you're experiencing.
Accessories: Accessories refers to all your electronically powered parts in your car. These might include your stereo, power windows, power locks, or clock.
Tools you need: Wrenches, socket set, multimeter, screwdriver
Keep your battery in good shape: It's good to keep your battery clean to increase the battery life and cleaning isn't hard to do. You can clean your battery with baking soda, water, and little elbow grease to ensure the connection between the car and the battery is strong. It's not a bad idea to mix in cleaning your battery terminals to your yearly maintenance.

Replace Your Brake Pads
How to know when your brake pads need replacing: If you hear a squeal when you apply the brakes, the pads need to be replaced. However, if you hear a grinding sound instead of a squeal, it usually means the rotor needs replacement. In the early stages of your car repairing life, you should probably take your brakes into a shop for service if you hear grinding. The brake pads, however, are an easy replacement you can do yourself.
Terms you need to know
Brake pads: The brake pads are the part of your brakes that apply the frictional force to stop the car. These pads have a built-in warning system that squeals when the brakes are applied and the pad is worn down.
Rotor: The rotor is the main disc part of your brake system that the pads clamp onto. It's connected to the wheel and when the pads hit it, the car slows down. The pads are held on the rotor by calipers.
Calipers: The calipers are the part of your brakes that push the brake pads against the rotor, which causes the car to slow down. The calipers are usually located at the top of the rotor, like bicycle brakes.
Tools you need: jack, torque wrench and ratchets, tire iron, c-clamp
How to replace your brake pads (step-by-step guide).
Fix Exterior Coolant Leaks

How to know when to replace hoses and other parts: If after driving your car you notice a pool of green, orange, or yellow liquid on the ground when you park, you might have a leak. The liquid on the ground is antifreeze and if you're lucky, it's coming from a hole or crack in one of the exterior hoses. Right after you stop the car, pop open the hood and look for the same colored liquid draining from a hose or plastic piece, but be careful not to touch it because it will be hot. If you can see the leak, you can fix it yourself. All you need to do is unclamp the leaking hose, put on a new one, and then reinstall the clamp. It's about as complicated as attaching an accessory to a vacuum. If you cannot locate the leak, it might be inside the radiator. For this, you are best off taking your car into a shop until you have more experience.
Terms you need to know
Radiator: The radiator is the large, air conditioner-looking part in front of the engine. When the engine gets hot, it's the radiator's job to keep the temperature down. To do this, it sends antifreeze through the hoses and to the engine. These hoses erode over time and eventually start to leak. When a hose is leaking, the engine isn't getting enough coolant and can overheat.
Water Pump: The water pump acts as the heart of your coolant system and pumps the antifreeze to and from the engine and the radiator. Like the radiator, it has hoses that can become brittle and cracked over time.
Hoses: While mostly self-explanatory, the hoses in the coolant system are what transfer the antifreeze between the radiator, engine, and water pump. These are made of rubber and often crack over time. They are usually attached with spring clamps or worm gears.
Tools you need: wrench, pliers

The Regular Maintenance You Can Do in an Afternoon
How to know when your car needs a tune-up: It's recommended you get a tune-up every 30,000 miles or every two years, whichever happens first. If you're close to either of those marks, it's a good idea to do some maintenance before taking a long road trip.
Nearly every facet of your regular maintenance, or tune-up, in car speak, is easy to do yourself. Each part of a tune-up is a separate procedure, so we've broken it down into individual sections that guide you through the process. With regular maintenance, your car will last longer and run better over time. We're not going to walk through each of these, but you'll find how-to guides by clicking the link on each section.
Terms and procedures you need to know to perform your own tune-up
Replace a Fuel Filter: The fuel filter does exactly what the name describes. It filters dust, particles, and anything that falls in your fuel line before it gets to the engine. Replacing your fuel filter can be a little terrifying since you're tapping into the gas line, but despite the inherent danger and caveat that you can't go around lighting fires while doing this job, it's usually a quick fix. Despite the name, the fuel filter often looks like a soda fountain cup with one or two straws sticking out of it.
Replace the Air Filter: The air filter is the part of the car that keeps dirt and particles from outside from getting into the engine when the engine sucks in air. It's incredibly important to your vehicles operation and a dirty filter can affect gas mileage and engine performance. There are few replacements on your car that are this simple. You need to unscrew a plastic lid, usually on the side of your engine, then take out the old filter, put the new one in, then screw the lid back on.
Check and Replace Spark Plugs and Wires: The spark plug is the part of your engine that ignites the gas and the air that cause combustion. When spark plugs fail, your gas mileage goes down, you may have trouble starting the car, a rough idle, or you might fail an emissions test.
Replace Distributor Cap and Rotor: The main job of the distributor cap is to distribute voltage from a coil to the correct cylinder. It essentially makes it possible for ignition to happen, which ensures the car starts. It's an easy replacement you'll do alongside replacing the spark plugs.
Oil Change: You have likely heard that you need to change your oil every 3,000-7,000 miles, but it's also good to do it when you do your tune-up. Not changing your oil can lead to contamination and will begin to affect your engine's performance. The problem is that it's often hard to properly dispose of the oil, so check online to make sure you have a disposal area near you, otherwise it may be cheaper to do it at a shop.
How to perform a basic engine tune-up (step-by-step guide).
Tools you need: ratchet and socket set, screwdrivers, torque wrench, spark plug gap tool, spark plug socket
Once You're Comfortable Under the Hood the Possibilities Are Endless
Once you're comfortable fixing minor car problems and doing your regular maintenance, you're likely going to want to try more complicated repairs. With the exception of major engine work, you can do many repairs from the comfort of your own garage or street. Diagnosing the problem is the hardest part of more difficult repairs, but Car Trouble make the diagnosing process a little easier. If your problem is a Check Engine light, remember that most auto parts shops will test your car for free.
For the repairs, using a website like AutoMD will give you a difficulty estimation to help you decide if you can handle it. The difficulty bar is based on the amount of time it takes, the location of the replacement or repair you need to make, and the tools needed to make the repairs.
Every car is going to have quirks and there will inevitably be a few things you can't figure out or can't get to. The main point to remember is that car repairs are not as difficult as they look and it's pretty hard to screw things up. Even newer cars with more electronics have parts that can be repaired in your driveway and it's just a matter of trusting yourself to do it. Getting over your fear of car repair is similar to teaching yourself Photoshop in a lot of ways, and fixing your car is more willpower than anything else.
